Hello everyone. I’m looking to get some andvice about getting back into reefing after my 150g tank crashed about 4 years ago. Been thinking about it for about a month or so but wasn’t really too sure until my wife told me yesterday that my son misses having a fish tank. Not sure how he remembers something from when he was so young but it must have really stuck with him.

I’m not looking to get into it as far as I did in the past. I had a lot of money invested in the display tank with everything automated; Neptune Apex, trident, doses etc. plus a very comprehensive support system in the garage with a large quarantine, frag tank a hospital tank. I still have my BRS 5 stage RO/DI system but that’s about it.

Just looking for a system about 40-50g that I can get started slowly and minimally. I have been looking at Red Sea reefer 200/250, Fiji cube and a couple others. Since I have been out of the hobby for so long I don’t know what products and companies are good anymore so any opinions or insight would graciously be appreciated.

Glad to have you back! Personally I would stay away from anything Red Sea related bc of the tank and stand issues. Waterbox and innovative marine get a good name although I don’t have experience with them

Avoid Red Sea for the time being. They seem to be very prone to failure and the company is all but ignoring the issue and giving out coupons when it happens.

Fiji Cube, Waterbox, Eshopps, and Innovative Marine are all fairly good right now. There are also the UNS Marine and Nyos tanks but they're a bit more expensive.

I'm always going to vouch for Eshopp's tanks since we have a 180g! They are not cheap tanks, but the build quality is top-notch.

I quite like Innovative Marine, and they make a 40 gallon All-In-One (AIO) system. If you're looking to keep things simple, and AIO tank can be a good way to go, these tanks have the filter "sump" built in the back of the tank. They are simple to run and look very good with the equipment largely out of sight.

Good luck!
