So, I'm out refreshing my herbs, when I took down this one fence hanging basket. Nestled behind was a huge black looking spider. I could only see the back, but I could tell it was very gravid. Well, live and let live, I continued gardening around it. Regular hunting spiders are competition for the venomous ones.

Well, after awhile, I noticed the spider had gone to the side and I could see under it a little. CRICKEY!!! It was a bloomin' widow spider. BLAH!!! My yard would have been infested with baby widows. I would have had a heart attack.

She already mated and possibly laid eggs, they don't change to the black color until after mating. I personally wouldn't worry about having them around, they don't bite on purpose, and it isn't as bad as they're portrayed to be. It's all personal preference though to keep them around.

The first time we realized we had them, I removed 36 of them in one night. I am not into spiders of any kind, let alone large ones, let alone venomous. They go in the places I have to blindly put my hands. I'm ADHD and am usually dashing around doing things. I don't like to have to think about where I put my hands. Their webs also lasso on your legs and I don't like dragging anything like that around. Other webs you walk through, with these I feel like Frodo.

tender spot and a slight temperature for a few hours.

Not that bad!!!! That's bad enough! *faints*

I'm petrified of bugs. I've come a long way since I started gardening 3 years ago. I still go snakey. I guess my intervention below isn't going to solve the problem now. I hope that piece of mail wasn't important.

Had an army buddy bitten by a brown recluse spider, the area bitten fell off a week later. To this day the scar is still visible, that was back in 1996.

That's an extremely rare reaction, the venom does cause necrosis, but usually a secondary infection like staph causes more damage to the bitten area than the venom.

I have personal experience with the brown recluse. The area turned black and died. There was no secondary infection, as they were placed on antibiotics upon arrival.
