Ok, not totally why I do this. But hear me out.

I've recently been working on upgrading my biocube to a 54 gallon corner tank. And let me tell you...everything I have tried to do with this tank has had some sort of hiccup, mishap, bad juju; nothing has been smooth or gone my way in this build. It's been my triangle nightmare. Last night, after working all day, I came home to do water changes on all of my tanks and test water, on top of cleaning the house and taking care of other animals. I was tired. And cranky. First mistake; I should've just gone to bed.

I decided to finally get my lights hung up, an ATI sunpower. And its crooked. After playing with around with the mounting bar I was hanging it from, playing with the wiring, nothing; still wonky. I'm seeing red at this point . I sat down on the floor, staring up at it, knowing it's something so simple and stupid, but I am so tired of fighting with every little thing on this tank, (and from the day in general) that I just can't see it. I think a little more. Tears start to well up in my eyes. This is it, this tank has beaten me ;Hurting. Where's my towel, I'm throwing it in. I check facebook and see what other tanks are going for. Maybe I just give it away for free, I don't care anymore, I just want it out of my sight. I take a deep breath and realize its 9pm and I have yet to eat all day. I'm alone for the night, and cooking is not happening. I order my guiltiest of guilty pleasures when my lactose intolerant husband isn't home; Pizzahut. Don't judge me, I needed something to comfort my soul.

While I wait for delivery, I look around at my other tanks. My 29g is fallow for ich, empty and lonely. My biocube just sprang up a few bubbles of bubble algae. Maybe I'm not cut out for this hobby, I tell myself. Maybe I can just get rid of all of my tanks, cut my losses and take up sewing or gardening. I am so ticked with this tank, my other tanks, myself. The doorbell rings, and it's time to drown my sorrows in grease and questionable cheese.

When I opened the door, the first thing this delivery guy said is "WOW, look at that tank." I awkwardly laugh and say yeah I've got a few. I open the door all the way so he can see the other two. "It's like an aquarium in there! That's the coolest thing I've seen on a delivery." I almost hugged him, I wanted to cry. I asked if he wanted to see them real quick, which he did, asked me a few 'what's this?' and got an 'I found Nemo!'. He only looked for about 5 minutes, gave me a fist bump and told me how great the new tank looked, even with just rock and sand. The look of awe on his face, like when I was a kid going to the aquarium for the first time, was everything I needed at that moment. While it may be the death of me, I have a new found drive to get this new tank up and running, finely tuned and filled with coral and fish. I'm not ready to give up.

If you made it this far, thanks for coming to my horrible TED talk. I hope I'm not the only one who has had a near mental breakdown from this hobby. (And before anyone yells at me for letting a stranger into my house, he was chill and I'm pretty sure I could've taken him ;))

Been there too.cant give it up though. Just today I was telling my co worker how i get so much pleasure out of watching my duncan close around the mysis i give him.Small things amuse small minds I guess LOL

There's all kinds of people and all kinds of aquarists. I believe that at least some of the most beautiful tanks fresh or salt are probably owned by people who have similar traits. I have ptsd, ocd, and suffer from being a perfectionist. I often think these things can both be good and bad. I often wonder if owning glass boxes is right for me lol. Luckily I'm also a realist and understand perfection doesn't truly exist especially in our tanks. But the small victories are so rewarding. Most of my life I've ran multiple tanks. I've cut down to one for sanity and time management reasons.

Im sure you are being too hard on yourself which I'm guilty of all the time. However deep down like myself it's what drives our motivation for success.
