Tip cups everywhere ...

No I haven't but I will ask next time I get one. If this is true I didn't know that is how it works.

Like I said, if the person earns it and doesn't act like they expect it then yes I'll tip but if it is expected and the service is sub par I more than likely won't tip.

And once again, I'm an electrician and we have to some down right nasty jobs and I hardly ever even get a thank you let alone a tip. At least once a week I'm crawling under somebody's house, through the snakes, slugs, spiders and sometimes sewage. It's my job, I do it, I don't complain, and I don't expect tips although a thanks, or good job would be nice.

If memory serves me right I think he told me that pizza delivery people get paid around .30 a mile for driving their own vehicles. The delivery radius is only 5 miles here.

I hope for your sake you don't use the same company twice when you order food or go out to a restaurant. I worked in the food industry in high school and college from delivering pizzas and serving food. You don't want to know what they do when they feel they're getting cheated. Tips are what most of these people are working for which I'm sure people have already stated.

Hahaha I have this addiction called reefing, plus I have 3 kids at home so I don't get to go out often. And like I've said about 7 times now, if they earn a tip I'll tip...

Good service at a regular restaurant means taking my order and bringing it, refilling my drink, asking if I want anything else and clearing the dishes before bringing dessert and coffee. At a buffet they don't bring the food since I have chosen to pick out as much as I want of many different items. A good server will make 8-10 trips to my table just to clear away the dishes since I enjoy trying a little of everything and they won't leave an empty plate on the table to stack up until I'm finished.

If you don't like it, its really quite simple, don't give them a tip. If it bothers you that much go to places that don't have them. But really, why knock their hustle, they might not agree with how you make your $ either ;)

One thing to take into consideration is that in each part of the country people get paid different wages and people are accustomed to tipping differently. Even though wage laws decide what is minimally acceptable, that does not mean that do not get paid more. It is possible for servers to make more than $2.13 an hour and in addition get their tips.

Exactly, and alot of those workers are trying to support themselves and a family, or fund a college education, and simply put LIVE off that wage too..... before anyone says well its their fault that they are in that spot, many of them are trying to do something better with themselves like going to school or have had a hardship like so many people in this nation that eventho it is much less then they were used to it is better then nothing or sitting around doing nothing because they won't make what they used to with some "point of sale" job serving ungrateful people.

There ya go, the $2.00 tip the pizza place charges goes to his gas and their pocket. It isn't a real tip, they just say that because if they called it a "convenience charge because some fatty didn't wanna get off the couch and drive 5 miles or less to go pick up their pizza" would probably offend someone. lol

Let's try to keep this thread clean. I understand this topic can hit a nerve with people but this is a friendly environment and I'd like to keep it that way.

I have never worked as a server in a restaurant or anything but my first job was at a boat dock. I made minimum wage and sometimes was tipped. There wasn't a jar (which is why this thread was started).

I think this thread was started about the tip jars on the counter of places and not about the tips at the end of a meal.

I have gone to college and have a career. My cousins have no intention of doing so. I have talked with them at one of their jobs while job hoping and they made more than me daily when at some restaurants.

I worked in the restaurant business for over 10 years and customary is 20% across the board (bottom line) IMO if you don't plan on leaving that when going to dinner then you should go to McDonald's or not go out at all. As far as tip cups in places I always leave my change or a buck in dunkin donuts, Starbucks, etc...anywhere that "serves me" food or beverage. It's the right thing to do! There's a reason that customer service is a dead trade in the US it's because most of us feel we are entitled to whatever we want and shouldn't show the appreciation of the person getting it for us because its "their job". Show some appreciation out there to the people serving us and maybe they'll be a little more friendly and go out of their way to help:)

I start at 20% which I think is as high as it needs to be and is rather generous. Then the server can add on or subtract. Most of the time they will get 20 but around here people act like they are doing me a favor to do their job.

I was under impression this thread was about tip cups at delis dunkin donuts etc not tip after being served or delivered a meal Obviously only a cheapo would stiff a waitress or delivery guy ! As far as those tip cups go in other places unless the person chats me up a bit makes me feel better ie (you have a great day with big smile) I'm not tipping I save my change it adds up !

There's a reason that customer service is a dead trade in the US it's because most of us feel we are entitled to whatever we want and shouldn't show the appreciation of the person getting it for us because its "their job". Show some appreciation out there to the people serving us and maybe they'll be a little more friendly and go out of their way to help:)

+1. I own, run, operate, mop the floors, etc. at a restaurant. We are a get it yourself establishment and will tell you that if you come in and expect us to get everything and kiss your behind at the same time. We serve good food and will be super friendly while fixing it for you. We don't ask for tips but if someone leaves one the employees sure remember that person and go above and beyond for them when they come back. Even a thank you every time or a compliment on a good meal or service goes long way.

Ok so just tip cups, here in Texas in the summer it's hot so we get snow cones a lot and yes there is a tip cup inside at the counter and at the drive thru window and I always leave a tip just for them smiling and putting shaved ice in a styro foam cup with sum flavored syrup and a plastic spoon. To me it's just a little bit extra that person will take home that day. It's a tip cup it's ur choice to leave one or not, I just think that could b my kids working that snow cone place one day as there first job ..... Oh yeah don't forget the bar always has a tip cup. So if u work at a bar or the snow cone place ill hook u up. Lol

Yep. Same here even if they don't work hard for it I kick them a dollar or my change. The bar always gets a good tip. ;)

tips pay my rent, gas, bills and buy my fish/corals and feed my kids!! think ill add a tip jar to my hat and wear it all over. lol jk Im a server i work hard for you and your guest to have a nice dinner. I consider my self a great server i joke and try to have conversations with my tables to get to know them and make them feel welcomed and relaxed, 20% is standard for great service. tip jars are totally different at dunking doughnuts there getting paid min wage or more they don't need tips. As for me a server i make 2.13 and hour. TIP YOUR SERVERS!! you dont want to know what happens when we see you back in the restaurant and remember how you stiffed me or how a 5$ tip on 100 tab is a good tip.

I'm sorry but that website is WRONG and have no idea where it gets it's information. I'd suggest checking out some .gov sites instead, for more accurate information. I live in Washington AND have worked in the food industry for many years. I no longer work in the food industry but Angie, my girlfriend, still does, as a tipped employee. A couple of times, in the past 4 years, Washington has attempted to pass a law that would make the minimum wage for tipped employees the Federal Minimum Wage. Both times, the law failed to pass. Washington state has one minimum wage, which will actually increase, Jan. 1. All tipped employees make at least that minimum wage, by law.

All that being said, I believe most tipped employees work their back sides off, earning every penny of the good tips they usually earn.
