Hello to all

Is anyone using titan vecton 850 uv or have used it and any pros and cons? Will it work for reefer 250 with a separate 5 gallon refugium? Why I’m trying to use UV is to somewhat control the Ich population 🤦‍♂️

As long as they rate it for parasite control for your size of tank – check with them before buying if you aren't sure. A specific flow rate should be called for, and parasites will be at the lowest-flow end of any suggested range they give you. Only algae and bacteria would be significantly effected at the higher end of the range.

Let me ask what ELSE are you doing about your situation?

Assuming it's ich (really Cryptocaryon) then UV may not make the most sense as Crypto is one of the more UV-resistant pests due to its (relatively) large size. Micron filtration would be a a better option – but it's worth saying that UV+micron covers a wide range of pests and micron is much cheaper to run than UV, so why not both?

Ruby Reef makes an effective set of in-tank treatments that ALSO work well, at least with micron filtration. (They tell you when UV should be shut off.)

Other measures would mostly relate to feeding and de-stressing the fish so their immunity can be recovered. Reduce overcrowding. Eliminate aggression. Provide the fish with more swim-throughs and hiding spots. Feed frozen or even live food as much as you can. Etc.

Don’t have much of an algae problem. The problem started with PB as usual. Didn’t have much of an aggressive fishes in the tank. The only aggressor is my purple tang which I’m still trying to save so far getting better. But in case it dies I’ll be running a reef only tank with ghost feeding for 10-11 weeks as recommended.

I been thinking about the Micro filtration but how effective is it?

You're fighting an uphill battle vs pathogens if there's ongoing aggression in the tank. Do a rock rearrange. Set up a mirror outside the tank. Try ALL THE THINGS.....otherwise one of them (hopefully the aggressor) has to go.

It screens them out...25µ mesh vs 100µ critters. The only limit is how effective your filtration section is, if that's where it gets installed. Well, there is also a limit on µ level....there's more or less backpressure on your pump depending on how small or large the mesh is in your micron filter. 25µ is a good compromise – I think this is the rating on Marineland's pleated filters. 100µ can work too as it clogs, the pore-size will drop to <100µ progressively toward zero...."best" depends on your system and what it needs.

I only have 1 fish left in the tank the purple tang all other fish died. I couldn’t figure out what was going on since there was no ich indication at all. Noticed the ich after all the fish died.

I’ll definitely try the micro before adding the UV.

Thank you

It really may have been the aggression as your root cause then....Crypto can be tolerated by healthy fish.

However, aggression keeps triggering stress responses that ultimately (among other things) depletes or disables the target's immune system.

So something the fish could ordinarily tolerate (a small pathogenic assault) can become a real problem...as we all know.

Marineland's Polishing FIlter (I think it's a Magnum Filter now, or something) and even their larger two Penguin HOB filter models accept micron cartridges. I would like to try those Penguin Micron filters to see how that works....could be a really nice way to go.

@Paul B also has a very snazzy DIY micron filter design if you look up his threads. (Looking up his threads is highly recommended on general principle! :))

This should work it’s 25 microns?

Yep! Just keep an eye on it as it proceeds to catch junk....flow though it will slow down, so the level inside the sock may rise.
