I currently have a 10 gallon reef tank that I will soon be switching to an 18 gallon tank. Right now I have Penguin BIO-wheel 150 over the back filter that works well but I am considering transforming the old 10 gallon into a sump filter. Is this a good idea and how in the world would I go about doing this?

Yes its a great idea. More water equals more stability. U might have to silicone in some baffles but depending on the flow u might be able to get away with nothing.

Definitely go with a sump if you have the option, especially when you can add 50% water volume to your tank by doing so. You will need a way for the water to get to the sump, usually with an overflow, and then back with a return pump.

As a sumpless guy myself, I would highly suggest a sump, especially if you are newer to the hobby. As jski notes, more water = better. The more water, the more buffering against mistakes.

I have a 29 BioCube and wish i knew back then what i know now and took the time to drill and create a sump!!! Just a great place for equipment, dosing, water changes, fuges, etc!!

If you have the means and opportunity to sump, I believe that is a better option than HOB. There are so many benefits.

Agreed, if you have the means to sump, by all means do so. Not only does it give you more water volume and therefore more chemical stability, but it also cleans the equipment out of your DT.
