I recently got a toadstool. It was beautiful and open before I got it. Took it home, placed it in my tank and a day later the polyps started to come out but never fully opened. Sense then nothing. It’s closed and opened a few times that I’ve seen. Now it’s developing white patches. Should I be concerned? Water levels are fine flow is good. And it tried to let its polyps open. Not sure what to do.

providing a complete list of parameters and a Picture of your leather will help determine what’s going on.. Leathers can sulk for extended periods sometimes especially after a move, they also shed periodically and will look funny during that period potentially having white looking patches along with a mucus coating.

BTW.. welcome to R2R!

They like a moderate flow. It helps them shed. They are hardy and can be finicky I wouldn't worry it is something they do.

Only other thing I can think of is maybe it is being stung by another coral or anemone. But flow and time is probably all that is needed!

Welcome to r2r!

Leathers are weird. Any new change in enviorment will make them close up. With that being said, since its new enviorment is your tank, it will be closed for about a week or two. It should begin to shed eventually, I recommend running carbon just so that during its shed it doesnt release toxins into the water, dont be afraid the toxins wont hurt you, but can hurt other coral.Carbon will stop this from happening. Also run carbon always if you decide to get a lot of leathers. Itll help with the cease of coral warfare. As for flow, Medium-High flow. They like any type of light, but if you were to choose for best growth, Low-Medium light. I keep mind on the sandbed, check my build thread for reference. The leather will adjust eventually to whatever height you put it at. It will also adjust to the parameters and placement. But what i said earlier, would be ideal. It took one of my large finger leathers a month to realize, hey im safe let me say whats up!

I lowered the light levels. Because it’s so big I can’t see a position where I can lower the actual toadstool other than moving all the other structure. At this point I’m afraid to mess with it.

The toadstool has started to develop the “waxy” layer you talked about.
