I bought a toadstool mushroom about a month ago. The tentacles will poke out just enough to see that they exist but I've never seen them actually get any length. Sometimes, the tentacles will be completely retracted, so I can see there is a difference. Is this normal? Does this coral just not have long tentacles?

This is what the coral looked like at the LFS, but i just assumed they'd get longer

First, toadstools are not mushrooms. Easy mistake to make since terrestrial ones are related.
Second, it will likely extend its polyps after it settles in, but toads can take a while to do so... And then, they can look all full and flowy one day and terrible the next. They shed periodically and can even slump over... but 99% of the time, they're fine and will open back up when they want to.

Third, don't ever buy a coral and expect it to look different than it does in the store... You never know.

It looks like a sarcophyton toadstool leather. They can have different length polyps with some being very close to the base and some being like the weeping willow.

I have a toadstool leather coral that looks similar (but maybe different?). It extends during light hours and especially during feeding time. Then at night when the lights go out it closes up, similar to the way yours looks in the picture.

My toadstool has what I like to call its moods. Most of the time it extends nicely but at least once a day it retracts for a little while.
