Total beginner here

Pick a single source with a proven example you like (seriousreefs for instance). It’s not to say that way is the only way or the right way, but it will give you something direct and tangible to follow with results that are shown to you. Too many cooks can very quickly enter the kitchen in reefing

Thanks I guess I’ll just follow one specific guide and hopefully I’ll get the hang of it

Welcome!

Dont jump in until you have read a ton about it or watch the BRS youtube video.

As far as size goes, here is my advice. Yes, this hobby is addictive, much more than freshwater. Get the largest tank you can fit/afford. Stay away from anything under 40-50 gallons (40 breeder is my recommended minimum). Eshopps, Innovative Marine, and waterbox make good reef ready systems that include plumbing and sumps. You get what you pay for. This may sound like a lot but I would start with a minimum of a 75-130g tank setup. You're going to end up wanting those awesome fish and room for coral colonies. That size is just the beginning of what will get you there. If you want tangs down the road, you're going to need to be able to house them.

You also need good test kits. I recommend for Hanna for nitrate and phosphate and salifert for everything else. Do you have an RODI? You will need one of those. You will need a refractometer. You will need an ATO. Read about all the eqipment.
