I can guarantee they are not starved out. They were fed well enough and happy enough for the female to be constantly berried and both are plump and fat. None of my fish just "survive" and all of my fish are fat and happy.
My counter to that they 'are fat and happy' is how often are they spawning. At a year+ they should be spawning a few times a week.

Once a week give or take. They do a mating dance every night but she doesn't always release her eggs every night.

For those who are curious, my pair hit 3 years last month in my tank. As they are wild caught, I have no idea what their actual ages are.
