Treating STN

I've had this tenuis for about a week and a half now and it has seemed to be doing fine but I was gone for a couple days on a trip and now it looks like it's either bleached a little while I was gone or maybe STN...nitrate about 5 phosphate around .05-.1 (hard to color match perfectly with Salifert...my alk hangs around 9...I noticed my chiller hose had a kink in it which may have been stopping the water from going through the chiller and caused it to heat up a little too much so maybe that's it...this is my first tenuis so idk how to diagnose these issues properly

Too high of a temp can definitely cause issues. How hot did it get?
STN is easy to notice, as the tissue is actually missing. Bleached tissue will still be there, but very white looking.

Any pics of coral under white light to assess what you have?
Low nutrients and high nitrate will pose issue also

I didn't think to measure the temp because I didn't notice what looks like the STN until after I unkinked the chiller line so I'm not sure but I wasn't gone too long so I doubt it got more than a little elevated...other corals look ok, just not the tenuis...it might have to do with my high alk at 10.5...idk why it's that high

@vetteguy53081 you can see in the one picture that the bleaching or tissue loss is at the base but in the other pic it's kinda on the side halfway up the coral...it might have to do with my alk is the other thing I was thinking

Dont see STN but do see quite a bit of algae which may suggest High phosphate and/or nitrates.
What test kits are you using ?
Location is important for these guys as is medium water flow and lighting.
What lights are you using ?
Any cleaner snails in the tank ?

Yeah I have cleaner snails...lights are Noopsyche K7 V3 which are more than strong enough for a nano tank...I use Salifert phosphate test and I forget the name of the nitrate test kit but I wouldn't expect high nutrients since it's a coral/invert only tank...I never had algae problems before adding that powerful light and the chief reason for algae buildup it due to me being gone for the past 2 days so it hasn't been cleaned

If parameters look good and you can remove the frag, I’ve noticed dipping corals using this iodine disinfectant slows snd stops some STN for me. I’ve started to add some to my coral pest dip when I receive corals. Instead of doing 2 dips I just add under the recommend amount to my dip before putting corals in tank.

You shouldn’t have to clean algae that often if CUC is sufficient. I’m not saying I don’t have algae that should be cleaned in my tank but 2 days shouldn’t produce that much algae growth.
I don’t think your plug looks like it has too much algae on it for any concern. The STN you’re referring to could be base growth or it could be STN. If it starts to climb up the coral I’d suggest dipping.

Thanks for both pics. Now I see it. Stressors such as increased temperature either modify the structure of the coral microbial symbiotic community or trigger the production of virulence factors. Temperature stress can increase chances of coral disease development in several ways by creating stress in the coral zooxanthellae and decreasing its resistance to infection, increasing growth and virulence of opportunistic coral pathogens, and decreasing the production of antimicrobials by symbiotic bacteria in the coral mucus, thereby facilitating the growth of opportunistic and potentially pathogenic bacteria.

Some possible triggers of infection are:
- Alkalinity spike
- Temperature spike
- Salinity spike
- Low dissolved oxygen
- Poor water quality related with phosphate levels up to 5 ppm
- Change in water flow
- Additions of sand
- Changes in brand of salt
- Bad test kits giving faulty results
- Levels of minor elements such as Iodine, Potassium, Strontium
- Light intensity
- - Changes in water flow
- Addition of new corals
- - Pesticides
- Airborne Contaminants or sprays

Didn’t realize addition of new corals was a trigger. Do you think that is certain corals that fear certain other corals or any addition could…?
