Trigger System felt roller

The felt roller ran out while I was away for Thanksgiving. It took me 90 minutes to get a new roll installed. I want to throw it in the trash out of frustration (don’t worry, I’m not going to). What is the trick to getting a new roll installed when you can’t staple the new roll to the old roll and pull it through?
