Well you need to know what your daily usage is. That will make it somewhat easier to know how much to dose. You can just wing it too, get your parameters where they need to be. Start dosing the next day with afr at the recommended start amount and test around 24hrs later to see where you are at and adjust dosage from there. I test alk once per day when I am trying to figure out my dosage and usage. I test at the same time everyday I test. I test right in the middle of my "day" at the peak of my light schedule. I use a Hannah tester. You can not test the effects of afr right after a dose it take some hours for all the calcium and alk to be available, this time varies from tank to tank. This is one reason its important to test at the same time and dont expect to see whatever you dosed right away. Testing daily will allow you to watch a trend with in the tank and adjust from there more or less depending on usage. I follow what Randy says and test for alk as its an easier test to get correct versus calcium you just have to wait. Currently I am dosing about 30ml on roughly 100g of actual water volume with a pretty heavy coral population this keep my alk around 8.5. I will tell you I am not the most fastidious reefer and my testing sometimes goes out to a week its usually these times when I noticed I had a consumption increase and my alk has dropped down to the 7.8-8.0 range. So yeah testing daily is probably a good habit/use of time if you are keeping sensitive corals. I have thought of getting an auto tester just to run the test 1 time daily but they are very expensive and not 100% reliable.
