Trying to pick out an innovative marine tank aio

I’m doing my homework. I want to make a nice tank in my basement. Currently I was set on a Im 30. 36” long tank. My dad says go 50g but it’s not As long but taller and wider. What do you guys think. Should I give up length for the volume? Or stick with the 36” length and let the fish stretch

Well I just set up(filled with water) my IM 50 lagoon bare bottom to the brim with 37 gallons of water. I'm at a loss why it's called a 50.
