So here the thing, I was just able to join r2r recently (computer issues). My build has been done for about 9mos. At this point but I'll post the pics of the process. It was alot of fun and I definitely got some practice on skills that I've used but haven't polished yet.

Here's the tanks I originally started with, I had fun building them in different shapes and sizes tried out different stock and equipment to see what I liked and what worked for me. In the end the giant blind spot (something I didn't consider) in the L shaped tank was so annoying it pushed me to rebuild.

Now that's thinking outside the box. Thanks for sharing, comrade

My first thing to do was beef up my basement sump that way it could hold the livestock I wanted to keep while there was no rush to put the new tank in the same location as the existing tanks.

Very, cool. Have you tried making a surge tank?

Then I built my form and started bending my acrylic to my heart's content.
The back got painted and I mixed marine epoxy and sand to make a permanent fake sand bed. I don't want to go bb but hate the bald spots that develop.
Then the top braces and lids were added along with the 18 bulkheads for the returns and loops.
Tank passed water testing :)

Well... If your reading this you can see my unique take on tank shape and a tank like that needs some custom lights.
So I consulted a few gurus for the layout and long distance soldering class (ive done it before but this project really increased my skills lol)

So here's how I built the board, lay out, enclosure, and programmed.

While I had the old tanks removed I took the opportunity to pull my carpet and paint the wood floor (just for funzies). Then I framed out the area the tank would be placed, brought up the lights and eventually got everything in place.
Some notes

To ensure the top of the stand was exactly the right size for the drop-off the top of the stand was auctually built first. The tank was formed and cured right on top of that piece to ensure an exact match.

Setting the lights in place was achieved by installing two hoists. It was a pain but manageable.

While there was some basic finishing to do with the stand etc the build was basically done. Here are some current pics. Live is starting to take off pretty well. I will be adding more sticks in the near future and then mostly just letting everything from out.

Professionally, yes I set them up for wastewater systems.
For my aquarium, not so much. Depending on how you look at the sump (three sumps) they could kind of be considered a surge system. Any of the sections can be isolated and run independently for maintenance purposes so if I was running my internal pump back to the dt from the upper portion (houses my ats, skimmer, carbon filter loop, and cryptic rock sections), then letting the overflow hit the other tanks and pumping from the bottom tank.. it would function as a surge. While I can open and close valves to achieve this at a moment's notice it is not how this setup usually functions. I'd rather let all the water run the full sump before being returned to the dt.
