Ok this is a legitimate question regarding hats for urchins. I was told that if you provide your urchin with actual hats they won’t pick up and carry off your frags or cuc. Is this true or are they just lame unnecessary decorations?

Hmmm.... interesting thought.
Mine wore a "Yoda ears" hat exclusively (Christmas stocking stuffer) for about a month without grabbing any frags.
Pulled all the urchin hats out (including the one he was wearing) when the novelty wore off and urchin immediately went back using zoas as hats.

Not a long enough experiment to mean anything with any amount of certainty but now you've got me thinking...

Currently mine is wearing a viking horn hat (upside down) because apparently he’s special, as well as an empty conch shell. But hasn’t moved any frags in a while. Before the hat he constantly moved frags and snails. He never really drops the hat and has me wondering if it’s due to being much lighter than an actual frag and plug…

It helps but It’s not going to stop them from picking other things up. If the hat is big enough they might carry it around for a week or so before dropping it for something else, but my urchins still pick up rocks and shells regardless.

I didn't get a hat in time, my urchin is carrying around a small bit of acropora :astonished-face:

Today's fashion is a live trochus and chaeto assembly. I couldnt capture it on camera but the snail was trying to smoke screen the urchin with a cloud of spawn lol.

Mine wore a Santa hat for the longest time, when I finally pulled it off him he started wearing frags and snails/ hermits. I think mine preferred the Santa hat actually because he never wore anything else while it was on. I'm currently in the market for new urchin hats... rather than my snails and hermits.

Mine uses it to distract the other one while it goes for an algae wafer... the other prefered the clove polyp frag and gave the hat back. YMMV
