Various 8 for 90g?

Is a varios 8 over kill for an SCA 90? I know you can dial it back but I want to make sure that I don't have too much flow from the return. The tank will be a mixed reef with a few fish. The dimensions of the tank are 36 x 24 x 24.

Thoughts?
 
Probably overkill on that size tank.

What type of drain do you have herbie?

I’m running two cor-20s (2,000 gph) at 50% on a 450g tank.
also forgot to mention that the sump is a trigger systems aquamarine triton 20. I don't know if that makes a difference or not, I got the sump because I got a good deal on it and for the smaller footprint.

3/4” drain line or 1”?

If 1” I believe 600 gph is the standard assuming no bends, elbows, etc.

You may be able to push more than 600 gph through it, but you don’t want to run into a situation where you have the pump turned all the way down but it’s still too much for the drain to handle.

I would probably go with a varios 6 and even then it will need to be turned down some.

You don’t want to push the water through your sump too fast…so the skimmer can work effectively, etc.

1" drain that has two elbows and one gate valve. I’m still working on the return plumbing. I tried moving the sump in different spots, and this seemed like the best position.

700-1,000gph advertised flow should be plenty for this system!

Ok, so just take into consideration that the two elbows will slow the drain even more.

The varios 4 might actually be the best option.

Ok, so just take into consideration that the two elbows will slow the drain even more.

This is a rebuild of the system as the stand was showing signs of failure. I replaced it with an aluminum stand. I actually used the 8 on it with the original sump. I have a Sicce syncra 3.0 and an old school Mag 9 that would probably work but I was looking to use a DC pump or something that would work with my apex.

Dang that sucks….I didn’t know you had it already. You could try it…just set it to the lowest setting and see if it’s slow enough.

I could do that as I actually have a 30 x 20 x 10 frag tank that I may set up at some point. I am currently using a IM lagoon 25 as a frag tank while I get this one rebuilt. I must admit that the AIO is nice. I would have to do some research on how to build a manifold if I went that route.

Oh manifolds are easy! Just stick a couple of tee fittings together on the return plumbing!

You just put a valve on each outlet from the manifold (you can get away with ball valves here) to control flow rates to each thing the pump is feeding!

If I were to do the manifold, I would be a little bit over the sumps rating as far as the advertised tank size it can support.

disregard that. I read it wrong. That was just for the refugium section.
One of the main requirements for the Triton method is to have a refugium sized at roughly 10% of the display tank volume. The TRITON20C refugium will hold 9 gallons when at the highest water level setting (11.5″) allowing it to support tanks up to around 90-100 gallons.

And nothing says you can’t do a remote refugium either!
