Vendor Salinity

My shipment of Anthias came in today, I tested the water they came in and my refractometer read 1.040. Tested again. Re-calibrated my refractometer becuase I couldn't believe it. 1.040. I won't name the vendor yet, but does this make sense? I understand lower salinity, but this is nuts. They are still alive acclimating for quarantine. Somehow.

That is crazy. I am glad that they are all alive!

Your post is a great PSA on testing water from LFS as well as shipped live stock. Nothing better than a trusted refractometer and some calibration fluid!

Yes. Well if your refractometer's instructions say to.

I test mine with 35 PPT fluid.

Single NO3 test reads 50-100. Probably around 80. They're still alive. One is barely breathing and on its side but I'm hopeful. This could take all day.

Going down in salinity isn't too stressful (going up, is). Therefore, I wouldn't be doing much acclimation here.

Also, 1.040 is the saturation point of seawater. It can't get more salty from there.
