BRS shows the 2.0 version as discontinued, this in the 2.1 product. Compared to other man-made reef rock, is the Walt Smith product "all that?"

Starting a new tank from scratch - I've considered other "live rock" too. I'd be interested to hear thoughts and opinions.

Walt Smith reef rock is dry rock that is porus dyed synthetic rock.

For a short time, Walt Smith rock was inoculated by Tampa Bay Saltwater. Not sure of the end product, but it is no longer available.

I use diver collected uncured live rock from 30 miles west of Tampa Bay in 30’ of water.

Hiya Subsea! I have a good buddy who swears by the "real deal" live rock from the ocean. I'm a little worried about hitchhikers, but I do love the look and bio-diversity it can add. What's your take on using some Gulf Live Rock to seed a larger quantity of stuff like Reef Rock?

Without a doubt, diver collected uncured live rock from the Gulf of Mexico is a gumbo of diversity. In 75 lbs I found two Aptasia, which are not difficult to eliminate. Most of the live rock went into a 2 month mature 55G macro lagoon tank with both ornamental & utility macro. Some of the nicer rock went into 25 year mature 75G display. This rock was removed from GOM 30 days ago.

Of course Reef Rock would be excellent base rock to be seeded with diver collected rock.
