I was doing some maintenance in my tank this morning when I accidentally pushed on this probe holder. As you can see, the magnet is encased in the frame and has a glued cover to keep it sealed. I'm concerned about it's impact on the water quality. I have no idea how long it was exposed but the quality of this thing sure does irk me!! Is there anything I should do to "clean" the water after finding this?

Pretty common event. If you were to do an ICPOES test on your water right now, you might find excess tin, zinc, chrome, vanadium, and who knows what else. Whether any of that is having any effect on your livestock is much harder to say. Many people would drop a polyfilter and some extra carbon in their sump for awhile after finding something like this, even without elemental testing.

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?

  • I have used a HOB on fish only or quarantine tanks, but not on the display tank.
