Water parameters affect shell growth?

So I snapped a picture of two of my turban Snails and as I watched them, pondered on the growth rings... There looks to be a difinitive color and pattern variation from the time they've been in my tank which is likely attributed to water parameters. Just interesting to see such drastic growth patterns... All 5 of them exhibit this marked change.

Great picture! I'm also curious about this. Following along. Maybe someone on the #reefsquad will have some ideas, or perhaps one of our other members who are experts on inverts.
 
I was talking to our local dive pro/ marine biologist and he said the colouring is directly attributable to the food they are eating. The stripes on wild snails are normally due to the different seasonal foods which I guess don't continue once introduced to the aquarium
