Water proof 2x4 stand

Do you all apply polyurethane/varnish/lacquer/whatever on a 2x4 stand frame before adding the plywood skin?

And do you cover up the screws holes to prevent moisture getting in?

(Im sure both things will help but is it enough to warrant the effort)

I recently finished building a stand for my 75. I filled in the screw holes, and I coated the entire thing in a black stain/poly. A little effort now pays off in the long haul ;)

Just you clarify, You coated the frame in poly, let it dry added paneling, then coated the the paneling?

(I wanted to leave it unpaneled but way too many screw holes to cover and its a shame to make a wood fram and cover it with paint)

I put it all together and then coated it. I used caulk to seal up the seams where the uncoated wood was, so no moisture or water can get in. And the stain I used was a stain/poly combo :)

I'm a big fan of epoxy. I coated my dimensional lumber with West Systems epoxy, every single square inch of wood. I then skinned and placed the stand floor in there and epoxied all that. I varnished the out-facing maple ply. I had that stand running for 5 years without an issue. I neglected to edge seal the skin with epoxy before installing and two leaks have revealed that issue but the structural portions are solid. I have had it up again for almost a year after 13+ years being fallow & in storage and it is still rock solid. As crabs said, a little effort now...

Yeah but its not fun, and I cat use the wood glue I have to attach the panels

But youre right, Ill do it

For a nice piece of mind I'd go over the screws with a thick coat of poly
