Consider using good ole oil based polyurethane. It outperforms just about all expensive alternatives (e.g., Rubio Monocoat, etc.).

The method that I use: One coat of water based sealer. Followed by two coats of polyurethane. Do this in your garage or outside. Like most finishes, this isn't something that should be done inside your house.

Sorry I thought you were talking about the Sump. I make sure to protect against salt creep overflow using Acrylic L or U shaped lips . It works . You could use Acrylic or better polycarbonate And just use it plain or glue lips on it using weld bond I would Think , and keep it looking nice

I use the urethane method always but if salt gets on it it still will not be 100% to me the wood gets punky over time which is why I use acrylic . I don't use don't use High Density wood products. It swells and weakens

I love the smell of high octane fuel in the air when NASCAR makes their first lap, a close second is the smell of nitromethane at top fuel drags 🤣

But seriously, yes some wood finishes have an odor that just lingers for days after it's cured. It's that new furniture smell lol. Lacquer is not too bad odor wise, but only because the 95% VOC flashes off immediately. Our custom kitchen cabinets were sprayed with vinyl sealer and have 4-5 coats of catalyzed lacquer and they've been impervious to everything for near 20 years now.
