Water Smell

Just a few things that come to my mind, I hope one of them already is the solution to your issue:

Maybe a snail climbed out and is now rotting away behind the tank?
Do you have stagnant water somewhere in the sump or does the smell come from the protein skimmer?

Especially when cooling the water with fans which increases evaporation you sometimes have some smell coming off the tank, but it should just "smell like the ocean" and not really repulsive.

In new tanks it can be a bit different during algae/bacteria/whatever blooms, but if you don't see any outbreaks that's odd. If you have a secondary overflow (for safety if the first one gets clogged) and the water level wasn't properly adjusted it's also possible that something grew in there and now that the water level is adjusted and it runs dry, it gives of the smell.

How is the smell today?
