9 Years...

God bless all those people that lost their lives, the families htat lost their loved ones, the police and firefighters that did everything they could to help, the cleanup crews, and all the troops.

My memory...i had left manhattan to go to my consulting gig in NJ along route 80 west. I was running late that day and was almost at my destination (morris plains) when I heard on z100 radio that a plane had crashed into the wtc. I thought it was a joke (as sometimes the jocks get bad info) but when I switched to 1010 wins (all news) they confirmed the story which scared me. I didn't know what to do while driving but I felt something was wrong. I called our pager service and had them send a page to one of the engineers who was on my team with this message :"wtc hit by plane - please verify". When I got into the office my entire team was watching streaming video on the internet. 30 minutes later that connection was lost as everyone was pounding the websites. A buddy of mine in chicago called to say you have to watch tv asap. We went to the cafeteria where they had tv's and they were showing the fire/smoke. At that time the company kept repeating to us that we were not to leave the building or rush back to NY. I also heard they were closing all the bridges/tunnels back to NY (holland, lincoln, gwb). But my wife was pregnant and went to work that day in mid-town. Although she was nowhere near the disaster I was pretty freaked. I decided to try and find my way back to NYC even though everyone else was calling hotels to get rooms to sleep in.

I found a route back into NY (via tapanzee bridge) and I went down I-87 down into the Bronx before I was forced off the highway by a blockade of police cars allowing only emergency vehicles. I somehow found my way into Manhattan across a very small bridge. I will never forget when I lowered my window to ask a guy "where is manhattan" and he's like - you're in manhattan! Columbus Avenue on the upper west side was a ghost town. It was eerily quiet except for the plume of smoke you could see far downtown. I came home to find my wife safe but we also had a young boy and a mother and daughter at our house. They couldn't get out of Manhattan and were staying with us overnight. That night we had dinner, prayed and I just hugged my wife for the longest. Thankfully the child/family were all reunited later.

My memory is of two beautiful soaring glass/concrete towers with an enormous climate-controlled mall underground. Elevators that skyrocketed up and down to the observation deck. Those are the memories I will always keep.

This is one of the events where everyone old enough will remember where they were and what they were doing when they got the news that a plane had hit the WTC. A guy I worked with came in and said he had heard on the car radio that a plane had hit. We though it must have been a light aircraft. In a few more minutes we were to find out the shocking truth.

All of us grieve for the people who lost their lives. We also remember the family and friends and what thoughts must be in their minds on this day.

I was so very proud in the following days, weeks, and even today when I see the outpouring of patriotism demonstrated from all corners of America. From New York City to the west coast, from big cities to small towns in mid America, we all joined hands as Americans. We put aside being Republican or Democrat. We put aside being being black, white, red, or yellow. Wealthy persons and poor persons saw the same tragic events. My faith in my fellow Americans was restored. Out of that horrible attack came a renewed sense of caring for our neighbors, whether we actually knew them or not.

The world changed for many people that day.

May God let the families and friends of all thoes who lost there lives that day find peace and happiness on this very sad day!!! It may have been 9 years since that day but it is like it just happened to me and my family, I lost two of my best friends that day in tower number 2...... It hardens my heart to see how many americans did not show respect for this today.....
On that day I was making hay with friends when we got the news, got home in time to see the second plane hit the last tower..... The thing that will stick in my mind from that day is when I walked out of my mom and dads farm house with my wife and kids.... that was the first and more than likley the last time me or my family will look up at the stary skies and see no planes, no rumble from there engines, just an erie quiet and at that point is when I found out my friends were in tower 2, may god bless there families and may god shine down on all the families and workers that tried to save as many as they could.
