so I've decided to get away from my canister filter and build myself a sump. It will be 10 gallon for my 29 gallon bow front. I will be using a HOB overflow box. Need ideas of what and how many compartments I need. Post some pictures of them sumps. Will use filter sock, protein skimmer and return pump, haven't purchased it yet, but thinking at least 500gph. what is the preferred name brand of return pump?

As far as the sump goes, you really only need to put a baffle in there so you don't get micro bubbles from the skimmer into your DT (basically 2 compartments). Make the first compartment as big as you can leaving just enough room for your pump in the second. You'll need the space for a skimmer, they can take up quite a bit of space. As far as pumps go, I personally like the Lifeguard Aquatics quiet one pro's or the Sicce. 500 GPH is a lot for a 29 gallon tank, 200 GPH is plenty. Then you would just need one power head in the tank for flow. Rushing 500 GPH for a 29 gallon tank in a 10 gallon sump (which will only really have about 7-8 gallons in it) is a bit much.

Thanks for the reply, was wandering if anyone was going to give an expert opinion or not? I built my simp over the weekend. 3 chambers, thinking skimmer, miracle mud with mangroves, then return. I wanted to make sure to have enough to pump in case I ever needed or wanted to add reactors.

Sorry for coming late to the party, I just saw the post today. Maybe the pump suggestion will still help. Happy reefing
