Hey guys. My friend woke up to find this hairy crablike thing in his tank but we aren’t sure what we’re looking at here. We could use your expertise! It roughly the size of an Oreo but thicker. Here’s a picture for reference.

Some sort of gorilla crab. I hope he got it out when he found it. It looks cool though would make a good refugium pet

Oh and welcome to R2R! :D

A gorilla crab. dang, that name suits it. He hadn’t gotten it out this morning before work. Is it dangerous to have in a reef tank?

And thank you for the welcome!

I would post this in the invert section. It could be bad, but it might not be. All hairy crabs are not dangerous to coral, but most people toss them just to be sure.

I had one but not of that color. Caused me problems though

I was kinda hoping for a picture of an oreo in the tank. but anyways it is a gorilla crab, they will eat just about anything in the tank. There are traps you can make but their success is limited. Most people put in a piece of scallop or other meat and catch them when they go for the bait.

Too bad they can't be trusted. ( crabs in general) . very cool color & the size of an oreo ? That's huge ! I keep saying this ,I enjoy these ID threads I see all kinds of cool critters.

Gorilla crab for sure. I had one i thought was an acro crab when he was the size of a thumbnail until he disappeared for 3 months only to return the size of a large turbo
