Old thread but, since this happened to me yesterday, just a reminder to stay safe.

This is why you shouldn't use cheapie power strips near an aquarium:

Luckily, I was home, smelled burning, and was able to find this on fire and unplug it and everything plugged into it.
It's on a dedicated GFCI outlet used only for the aquarium, but it didn't trip.

Nothing really dripped onto/into the power strip so I assume it was just moisture build-up over time on cheap/inadequate components.

It was mounted for about 3 years (across two tanks) in the same spot in a nook at about water level, beside the tank.
*in the end, I feel lucky to have caught this in time,,, coulda been much worse
 
Had a fan stop working in the hood of a Biocube. Light overheated and set my house in fire. Was out of my home for 6 months due to it. That was about 15+ years ago
