What is my toadstool doing?

Started with a hole right in the middle of it's head. I didn't think they split like this?? It's been doing this for many weeks. Seems it is splitting into two smaller heads. Can I cut one off once it's done splitting?

This happens sometimes when there is a small cut. And yes, you can cut the piece off and place it elsewhere or you can even do it now as it splits.

You can do it that way or just cut the cap. They are super resilient.
