Fun fact: There is actually a similar-looking (buy completely unrelated) coral to Heteropsammia called Heterocyathus. Like Heteropsammia, Heterocyathus is free-living, facultatively zooxanthellate, favors the same niche (sandy inter-reef habitats), and houses a peanut worm which it uses to move around. What separates Heterocyathus from Heteropsammia is that Heterocyathus has visible costae and more exert primary septa. Genetic studies show Heterocyathus is most closely related to Oulastrea.
