What is the best substrate for a higher flow mixed reef?

I have fine sand in my reef. Since I have increased the flow in my tank the sand is making a mess. I am wondering what any of the experienced members are using for suubstrate in a mixed reef? I have a few sps up top, zoas, palys, bta, leather. Down low are several acans, favia, hammer, blastos, mushrooms ect... Tried adjusting flow but can't seem to make the sand storm stop. It is covering the tops of bottom corals which i have heard the fine sand can work is way under heads of acans, blastos and such and make them come loose. Having sand all over the top of them is probably not good for them either. So I'm wondering what substrate to replace my sand with for a higher flow tank? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

So this is just something I've noticed but if you add some thicker grain sand like special grade the bigger grains will sit on top. The fine stuff will settle to bottom. My mixed sand and cc did that crushed coral sat on top until I would suction it all than the fine would pull up. Couple days later cc on top again. Idk. Might be a idea.

You could go with just a coarser grade of sand which would be heavier and you could try raising your PHs or pumps. Some use crushed coral but it seems to need a little more maintenance in order to keep it from trapping detritus.

No substrate. BB tanks are the sps favorite builds. I guess.
