I recently found this shrimp in my tank and have never bought any shrimp so I’m sure he hitchhiked his way in some live rock in my tank. I also know there is another one living in my rock but I can’t get it out yet. Anyone know what kind of shrimp this is or if it might be a danger to my fish/coral?
Thanks

Looks like a peppermint shrimp. How big is it?
I’d say it’s at least a couple inches. I thought it was a peppermint shrimp at first too but it’s very see through, very little red in it if any. I’ve never kept one before though so I suppose that could be normal. Also it stayed in its hole in the rock 24/7 are they usually that shy?

I see faint horizontal lines (maybe) which would remind me of a peppermint, some have very weak pigments, others bright, maybe difference in collection area.

Edit: Looks like a shrimp from the Lysmata genus, but hard to tell the coloration. Peppermint shrimp are in that genus, as well as cleaner shrimp. L. wurdemnanni would be the typical peppermint shrimp from the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. If your rocks come from there, I'd have a close look at coloration to see if it matches typical peppermint shrimp patterns.

Then there are Indo-Pacific species that look a bit less pink/red-striped, like L. vitatta or L. californica. I don't know much about how common these species are, but hope that helps!

That was my first thought also. Did your rock come from the ocean or a LFS? Also, if it is a peppermint shrimp keep a close eye on it. I bought some to eat aptasia in my tank and after they were through with the aptasia they started eating my rock flower anemones. I ended up catching and putting in my sump.

There are a few different species of peppermint shrimp, some peppermint shrimp are grey in color like the ones at my work.
