We have a 2 y/o tank, and *just* introduced a sand sifting starfish on the recommendation of our LFS. We are planning to upgrade our tank, and most everything i've read is that you don't keep the sand with an upgrade. If i get new sand, won't our starfish starve? What are my options for making sure he's happy and healthy?

I personally have usually kept the sand, it really depends how dirty the sand is and if it’s been disturbed before. I believe most of the sand theories are around deep sand beds being disturbed, or sand beds that are years and years old and never disturbed.

I’d keep the sand, rinse it, and put it into the new tank myself. You could also take the star back to a LFS or friends tank until you feel ready.
