You have to have flow in your tank mp40. If you already have everything you need and are just trying to spend some money definitely go with the apex.

I would get the Apex, then get the Mp40. Then if you would like you can control it with a module and the apex

Some details about your setup would make it easier to help you decide. If your ok on flow I would go apex. But if flow is needed then I would get the vortech and live with basic timers for now

If you currently have basic powerheads without any type of random flow or wave action, your tank would greatly benefit from an MP40. Proper lighting and flow are necessary, flow even more so IMO. The Apex automation just makes things a little easier but isn't a necessity.
