Hello everybody I’m new here. I was thinking about adding a couple of clown fish to my very basic fish and live rock only aquarium so far, I only have an engineer goby and some crabs. I picked up this little clown today thinking it was a ocellaris. The tag only said assorted premium clown. But now I’m starting to think it might be a maroon. Because of the way way it swims aggressively and the reds are a little darker. Let me k ow what you think. Thanks

It does look a bit robust so it may be part maroon. Maybe a hybrid ocellaris x premmas?
That's my initial guess if you observe some aggression. Although with just an engineer goby you shouldn't have a long term problem either way.

Thanks for the response. At first I was sure it was a snowflake ocellaris because of the black bordering and darker eyes. But the more I look at it I see a more thick bullish head and aggressive swimming. I want to eventually pair it. Is there any sure way to tell what kind of clown it is?

I should preface I am still a beginner. The colors look ocellaris or pecula. Maybe it’s just me but that Dome doesn’t look ocellaris to me. The head looks like a maroon. Very confusing

It could be the angle of the photos. While not impossible, I highly doubt it's a hybrid. My guess is that's a deformed ocellaris (snowflake). The probably of that is much higher than a hybrid.

Update, I put what I thought was another snowflake ocellaris in my tank and it was instant war. My original clown freaked out and chased it around the tank. I don’t think lump head is an ocellaris hes darker and larger than usual ocellaris. And his forehead is steeper. I took the ocellaris snowflake back. I think lump head is a lighting maroon.

They’re definitely both maroons. I went back to the pet store and introduced big daddy black maroon, and they both get along with no complaints from either. They are tied at the hip with zero violence.

Definately doesn't look like a maroon....appears to be one of the many designer snowflake clowns.

Oh ok! Well at least they get along. The black and white is close to 4 inches long. I didn’t know ocellaris get that big!
