I purchased a used SCA 120 and the previous owner converted the herbie style with return inside the overflow to a bean animal with the return running out the back and over the top of the overflow. Should I change it back or save the effort?
Any other ideas are welcome.

If it were me, I would keep the return from the back if you have the space and ok with the aesthetics. This allows you to have more drains, which will allow you to have more flow, but also keep it quiet.

As long as everything works and there are no issues, I would leave it as it is.
