Wheeler's Shrimp Goby

Hey everyone!

So yesterday I ordered a Wheeler's Shrimp Goby, and I've never had one before. I wanted to know what they are like. I have a 40 gallon reef tank. Do they get big? Do they fight? Do they dig a lot, make the water cloudy, like a watchman would?

So yesterday I ordered a Wheeler's Shrimp Goby, and I've never had one before. I wanted to know what they are like. I have a 40 gallon reef tank. Do they get big? Do they fight? Do they dig a lot, make the water cloudy, like a watchman would?

Amblyeleotris wheeler is an incredibly easy goby that stays rather small and don’t get much bigger than 2 inches. They aren’t overly fussy when it comes to feeding and will eat essentially anything that fits in their mouth. As for how much they dig, the only time they dig a ton is when paired with a Pistol Shrimp (Usually from the genus Alpheus). Even then it’s usually the pistol that digs whilst the goby stays on lookout.

Do they fight? Only if trying to pair them with the same species and both are the same gender. I.E. two Alpha females.

I just ordered a bonded pair with a pistol shrimp. I’m also interested in best care for them

i had one... it jumped through a one inch gap in my lid...

What would you do for a netting/cover?

I have one and a candy cane pistol. It took a long while (2 months) before the Goby would be out at all during the day. It is still very shy, but I see it and the shrimp more frequently now.

It eats most meaty foods and ROE. The shrimp does all if the digging. Easy fish.

When it was new, the Goby did try to escape, but I have had a lid since the tank has had water.

So my mesh lid is coming a couple days after the goby comes. Should I be worried it’s gonna jump out in the first couple days? Do gobies eat all the copepods in the tank? would you just feed some mysis or frozen baby brine?

I would worry about the first couple of days.

I have not see my Wheeler Goby eat pods at all.

Mysis or brine shrimp will work.
