Is it pointless to add a algae reactor with a small amount of chaeto if a tank is currently battling decent amounts of gha? If so when is the right time to add a reactor

"is it pointless?" No it is not pointless.

If you are battling GHA then you have plenty of nutrients for the chaeto to consume.
What if the gha in display out compete the little new cheato addition causing it to not grow?

Remember......you are the largest member of your cleanup crew.

Even if you find the perfect critter to eat up all the gha for you, they still generate waste that can and will continue to support algae growth.

Manually removing the gha is ideal because then those nutrients are exported completely instead of converting them to fish poop for later regrowth as algae again.
