Which Suction Cup Handles for Tank Install?

Good morning. I have a moving crew arriving Friday to move my new Cade 1500 Peninsula from garage into the finished basement. I wanted to have 4 suction cup handles available if they chose to use them. They are bringing other equipment.

I was thinking about these as they are available locally.

I used four of these to move a 120 gallon down from a second floor and out of the house. I only picked these because it's what HD had in stock. I was bit a skeptical using them but they hold surprising well if you take the time and apply them correctly.

I suggest if you're hiring movers, to let them be responsible for all equipment they utilize for the move. If something were to happen using equipment you provide, then the responsibility falls on you.

I understand where you are coming from about providing equipment. But I think they are going to need them. My understanding is its pretty much a necessity and the owner of the company has been communicating with me about their plan and his guys skills. But it hasn’t included suction cups so i want them on standby. I don’t have many options and they have fantastic reviews about moving heavy loads delicately but this is not something they usually do. I need bodies and they are what I have acesss to. Anyone have experience with model i listed?

Should be easy if the tank is under 31 inches otherwise what are you going to do? 31 is 31. Suction holders really won't matter.
The mover.wont break thru the door frame.
I figure you got this already and the tank is under 31 inches

It’s worth mentioning that suction cups aren’t typically intended to lift in a vertical orientation! (They can slide)

— they will only reliably carry their rated load when oriented in a horizontal position! (Think, inside the tank, attached to the bottom pane!)

Also, good call on the 8” suction cups! — one 8” suction cup has the same surface area (and thus load bearing strength) as four 4” suction cups!

I recently moved a 340 pound 210 gallon fish with 4 suction cups. we might’ve done it incorrectly, but we placed them to the sides of the tank
For a vertical lift and each person grabbed one cup. It worked well. And carried it up 15 steps and down the hall Make sure that you don’t have it adhered to any paper that might be on the glass and make sure that everyone is familiar with how to apply the suction. sounds silly, but one of my buddies did not pump it all the way up and we almost had an accident, but when it was fully engaged, they worked very well

The tank is 29.5 inches wide. Thats tight for something that weighs around 400lbs, takes at least 4 people to lift, and will chip if it bumps anything. But yes it will technically fit.

Every single video I have seen of professional or regular tank installs they have them vertically on the sides of the tanks.

While the weight ratings may be for horizontal, i haven’t seen any I’ve looked at that state that. I would assume the guys that install tile showers would be interested in the horizontal only rating, because that wouldn’t be good for them.

The ones I got are rated for 300lbs. If there are 4 being used simultaneously on a 400+ tank the aren’t close to exceeding weight limit.

8 inch definitely seemed the way to go.

With going thru the door you can pop off the trim that will give another 1/2 inch and you should be good. Have the door jam padded.
Imo I would put the tank on end on a 4 wheeler then using a strap 2 or 3 guys carry it tipping it to the guy with the strap and the others pick the 4 wheeler. Tank is padded up and door jams are padded.

They key to using any suction cup is to take time and make sure they're installed properly.

I've only paid to move one tank, my WB 330.7 84x30x25" over 600 lbs empty. I hired movers and they did not use suction cups. I offered since my LFS said he would loan me his but the movers had no interest in them. I suppose people that specialize in setting tanks know the value but furniture and apliance movers not so much. I could see the blame being shifted to you if something happened. All they would have to say is they didn't want to use them but did so at your request and then your into a legal battle. JMO

Me? They carried it in and set it on rollers and then lifted it up onto the stand. I could have gotten it into the house the same way I did the stand but would not have been able to get it onto the stand or I would have saved the money and done it alone. I've set 180g tanks alone but this one was just too heavy.

I've had 2 large tanks moved, the 320 which was 67x36x30 a few years back. I had just a standard local moving company do this. I could have moved this with friends but paid because I wanted some one insured to do it, when they showed up I showed them the suction cups and had the head guy call the boss and ask if you use customer supplied equipment, what happens if there's a problem. The boss said under no circumstances can they use them, it would void the insurance.
It wasn't the movers. It was the insurance company.

The 500 gallon this last fall was 120x36x25, those aquarium weighs 850 lb empty. I had a specialty moving company that really only does unique items. Think pianos, hot tubs, large aquariums, lol.
He had an entire second truck of specialty equipment to move things. He showed up with four men, never once did they actually lift the aquarium by hand. They were a little bit more expensive than the standard companies. But the standard companies wouldn't even touch this one. The specialty guys might cost a little bit more but I will say you get a much better peace of mind than five 20-year-old kids showing up.

You'll be fine. I moved a 180 with a buddy using some suction cups like those that we rented from sub belt

This is basically what the owner of the company told me was their plan. Which if it works great, i’ll get my $200+ back for the suction cups.

How we move pianos up or down stairs.

Unfortunately my wife has made very clear that the trim the contractor just finished a week and a half ago will not be removed. So it will have to fit with the inch and a half clearance.

And to make things even more fun they installed a fire door from my garage to finished basement with non removable pins. Not the set screw kind but the kind with flush roll pins. I actually have a tool to remove and install roll pins but there is no acess to remove it when hinge is attached to frame. So i get to remove hinge screws on a brand new door and frame.

It was installed when i was at work and i didnt realize it till tonight when i went to just pop the pins.
