Why does cyano grow here…and only here?

Im at a similar spot. 2 year old tank, kicking goals with nice sps and good growth then bam - cyano. Mine tends to die down over night but by the end of the photo period it’s a crime scene.

I’ve tried no and low lights during the day and both strangely have little effect except to effect the SPS.

It’s very frustrating.
Same exact problem I’m having. Mine isn’t affecting my sps one bit, thankfully. Polyps are still fully extended and everything is still growing. But at the end of the photo period cyano has spread immensely vs beginning of photo period.

I do not have a cyano problem but it does pop up in spots at times. Why? Currently the only area I have it is in a low-moderate light, moderate-high flow spot on the tank bottom.

Update:
After 4 months, this area of cyano has finally disappeared!!! I purposefully did not clean or siphon this area to see what would happen. The outbreak of cyano got thicker and spread out about 6 inches in both directions over 2 months but then started clearing at the 3 month mark, first where it first started out then rapidly in the areas where it spread out. (I did placed a plating Montipora in the area.)

Light, flow and competition
Light and flow are exactly the same now as it was when the outbreak started and now there is absolutely no cyano. So those aren’t the issues. Why did the “competition” initially allow the outbreak to start? And why did the “competition” make a comeback?

When you figure out the answers to these questions, I'd love to know also.
*my story was in post #2 -- still have cyano,,, maybe getting a little better but SLOWLY

Did anyone on this thread beat cyano? Cyano will be the death of me. Can’t get the crap to go away!

The point of this thread is that beating cyano is not as simple as more light and more flow. It takes a lot of time and persistence to allow the ecosystem to develop to a point where cyano is finally put in check.

I beat cyano, but it took 2 years from the start of my reef. I too felt like it would never end. And I still have these spot occurrences but they really are not a big deal. I really can’t say what exactly is needed or happening in the reef to put cyano in check. Just keep cleaning and nurturing the ecosystem and avoid drastic changes that might simply reset the maturation process.

You are correct. Made a mistake that reset the biome about 4 months ago and am paying for it. Staying the course, it’s a long battle!
