Just for grins, I took a couple of shots of my tank with a wide angle lens. It's a 10-20 mm zoom 1:4 - 5.6.

This first shot covers just under five feet of a six foot tank from about 2 feet away from the tank. There is very little crop to the image, this is quite close to what you see is what you get. The only drawback to this type of lens is that the image starts bending a bit the farther from the center you get. All in all it is a nice choice for full tank shots.

This is a full tank shot with the same lens. The top and bottom was cropped, but the amount of cropping needed is much less than with a normal kit lens.

There are conversion lenses that could preform that function. Do a google of "Wide angle macro conversion lens" and you should find what you are looking for.
