Yeah I agree; I hate havin a fishing line on it to keep it from sinking lol...def need magnets.

can't tell if you're serious or not.. Hydrometers generally give a good reading granted you keep it clean after each use. Once you calibrate a hydrometer with a refractometer, the readings IME have always been accurate. Even then, it's only .01 or .02 off, if you keep your tank at a consistent salinity it doesn't affect the livestock since reefs can be kept at 1.024-1.026
Going to have to say power compacts also. Expensive and waste of electricity.

Suction cups, hydrometers, that painted man made "live rock" that is showing up at all the LFS, the magnets in glass scrapers that only work on paper thin glass even though it is as big as my hand, food packages in gel... Well there is more I am sure...

fake coral/plants great for sh tanks that cant have stinging corals, or fish only tanks
hydrometer, I use every week and check it with my refractometer to calibrate it
now for useless magdrive pumps they rust, marineland led, acrylic fragracks, mp pumps just silly to spend a car payment on a pump

The other day I checked my refractometer with my over 10 year old hydrometer.
The entire hobby is based off theory and science simultaneously. Yes we know the water needs salt, but my tank and someone else's could be just as healthy at different salt levels. After all, we use lower salinity than the ocean actually is. Why? Theory! We think, or at least have seen fish and corals thrive at these levels so we keep them there. What is more important to consider is stability. A hydrometer can help you there, even if its initial calibration is off. Its the quality of hydrometer that is important. The plastic arrow ones require no air bubbles whatsoever yet are bubble traps. I would pick the glass ones if I had to go back to hydrometers only I would have a nice case this time since it shattered.
I saw marineland LEDs up the list too. Believe it or not they do grow corals, just nothing beyond Lps and no spectacular growth. I'd say they are better than stock pc fixtures like the ones in biocubes. Which leads me o my next point:
Stock biocubes! Ugh. With all the mods dedicated to making healthier fish you would think they would make them better out of the box. A stock cube can become a giant canister filter in no time.

I have an instant ocean hydrometer I've used for 5 years. It's always spot on with a calibrated refractometer. I won a Tunze conductivity meter here in a contest. Spot on with the hydrometer.
The Eco-Aqualizer. Totally worthless and based on bad science.
Most of us do haha. I choose reef accelerator over purple up though, seems to do well and doesn't look like milk. I used to enjoy watching the milkiness mix into the water though.

Its going to happen eventually, and then the day comes where you resent the growth of coralline on all your equipment and glass. So why buy a product that you dont need?

ill agree on the Purple up. it is basically calcium in a bottle. Ive gottenplenty of coralline in my tank without this snake oil. Same goes for the Zeovit Flatworm remover stuff. it dont work.
Don't hate on tanks under a gallon! Its who owns them that matters.

I was hoping other people would mention this so I didn't have to
TAPWATER CONDITIONER!!!!!! How many of us were bamboozled into using this crap!? My first tank was TAPWATER, conditioner, and salt. No wonder my snails lived for hours not years.
I would also like to add Tempered glass to the list. Ever try to drill out one of these? I can say from experience these aquariums really screw our dreams of reef readifying our existing tanks, and most of them are 55g that are everywhere!
Another one is acrylic. At first you cannot beat the look, but a year later you just want to smash it from all the scratches. What a waste of expensive material. Give me glass or give me death. Acrylic should only be used on equipment and sumps.
I still can't believe someone thought magnets filter water...no wonder my powerheads get so dirty. Which brings me to yet another reef tank fail:
Open overflows!!!! Light is not picky where it points and will illuminate a thing in its path. The right spectrum (the ones we reef with) WILL cause mass algae to grow. Over time our overflows get disgusting!!! Ahh and another one coming:
Siphon overflows. Boy do those things cause issues. Most require an aqualifter to be partially reliable. Snails can flood them, fish can get stuck in the pipes...and during power outages these can lose siphon and without a reliable pump will not kick back on. Thanks for the mess! Next:

Nitrate removers that were constructed from 10 Bio Balls and a gravel vac with a hose connection on both ends. $59.99 for $3 worth of plastic, and absolutely ZERO effectiveness.
