Would you ship it back?

Hey guys,

So we all get orders online. We all know everything is more expensive for everyone. We also know that styrofoam generally isn’t easily recyclable. So my question is, would you be willing to send your insulated shipping boxes back to the vendor for reuse?

Personally, I would be willing if they paid shipping back. I’d also even be more likely to “accept” a box charge if that was refunded upon return of the shipping box.

Thoughts?

I’d be more than willing if they paid the cost. Unfortunately it’s not cost effective to ship empty boxes unless in large bulk quantity. Also, the condition of the boxes may get degraded in transit many times.

I probably wouldn’t ship back a Styrofoam box that only costs pennies to make. If, however, it was a more durable and efficient insulated shipping box made from double wall plastic or aluminium that could be reused many times, especially if it offered better protection for the organisms being shipped, I’d be happy to return it. I’d even be willing to pay a refundable deposit on the box as long as I got it back once the box was returned.

Logistically it isn't cost effective for either party. Ideal situation is vendor does the best they can to minimize their cast, and the cost they pass on, to shopper. Receiver or hobbyist in our case recycles what they can. I've gone a step further and dropped off my boxes to a LFS who would reuse them. I understand that may not be an option to everyone though but an alternative.

Return shipping can be ground. probably less than 10$, to get a 20$ box back.

Definitely an alternative. That also the discussion I was having with a vendor. If the cost is truly worth the effort.

My local recycling center invested in a styrofoam melting machine years ago for this very reason!

I’m far from an expert on the subject, but apparently it all gets “melted” down to a styrene goo, and sold as a raw material to go back into the manufacturing loop in the likes of picture frames!

I was thinking more of something like this. At around 255 dollars for the smallest one, it would probably only be worthwhile for expensive or particularly delicate livestock. But if it really can maintain a stable temperature for up to five days, it would greatly reduce the risk of losing livestock if there’s an unexpected shipping delay. Potentially, retailers could offer it as an optional premium shipping method for customers ordering higher value livestock, rather than making it the standard for every order.

I don’t mind not getting a refund as long as the seller has to open the bags on their end. It’s an inducement for them to do better.
