My “brother” in hobby just bought this fish for his wrasse tank. The lfs dont know the id and im thinking it might be a type of fairy wrasse. Any idea? It has a visible pair of teeth at the front and faded red color with a black/dark blue spot on the side. Got a diamond shape tail with upper half got bit of and the color on its head its kinda like a chrismast wrasse but way more faded. Ive been looking for all the fairy wrasse that have the same tail shape but no match at all.

That looks like a hogfish but it has loads of qualities like a fairy wrasse. No clue what that is though but my guess would be some kind of hogfish super cool fish though

Definitely an Oxycheilinus species, likely Oxycheilinus bimaculatus from the looks of it. @Slocke may have a better idea of exact species though as I’m not 100% sure.

Its very similar to this one, is this species of wrasse reefsafe and compatible with other fish. He has a 1mx80x80 tank with about 15 speciments of different wrasse species, midas blenny, tangs and anthias, also hermit crabs and snails.

Ive found them to be compatible with wrasses but they can be 50/50 from what I’ve seen.

It's probably a bimaculatus based on color and I do see them regularly in LFSs and they do vary a lot in appearance. I had one for a while in a more aggressive tank and it was a bit too shy though it did always eat and had I had a better lid I think it would have done well eventually.

At my place its the first time I see this type of wrasse. We have plenty of halichoeres here and the leopard, bird wrasse but nothing close to this before lol

My LFS is massive and generally has around a thousand fish so common is relative lol

Did it sleep in the sandbed or in the rock crevices? My bro tank have sandbed but its for small wrasses. This one about 3inches long and 1-1.5 incehs thick. Can his 1.5 inches sandbed handle it

It's a rock sleeper. Not that this will mean anything to you but no members of the Chelinae subfamily sleep in the sand.
