Recently got a pulsing Xenia and bought it online so I am unable to return it. Just thought I should take a look at if they had toxins, and a number of websites and articles tell me that I should have been dead an hour ago. Can anybody help clarify this? So many news sites say they're deadly, but the news says what makes a good story. Is this going to kill everything in the tank, or me? Is it the same with all species of Xenia?

It's good to get confirmation. I swear I'm getting headaches, but I'm pretty sure it's my mind playing tricks on me. Seems fine otherwise.

Here is my 75 gallon overrun with pulsing Xenia. No headaches :)

Yeah, there seems to be no visible marks or reaction though. Awesome coral, so I hope I don't have any allergies to it. Just hear absolute horror stories or news articles which worry me a little, but I trust you guys more

I've heard plays and zoas to be absolute monsters, but also often the reaction is falsely mistaken for a Xenia, so Xenia get the bad name for really nothing instead

Did ER have to do anything special or did it go down over time?
Yes, antibiotic ,and prescription cream to help not blister and reduce swelling, wasn't fun.

They say anything about it being lethal by any chance?
I can't say not, anything can be lethal if you are allergic to it ?
look for swelling ,sore throat ,etc.
are you an adult ? if not talk to your parents.

It is interesting to look this up on the web. All of the "Xenia Toxic" info seems to be based off of one bad information story in the UK years ago.
Don't believe the hype...
That being said, there are many things that can be toxic in your aquarium on different levels. Most people are concerned with Zoas or Paly's because of some may carry a Palytoxin. But what escapes most people is that the common Dinoflagellate Ostreopsis sp. contains palytoxins, and occurs in most marine aquariums at one point. :thinking-face:

It might sound stupid, but I haven't told my parents yet, as I don't want to worry them, and because I haven't had anything happen in the last hour and a half.

Thanks for clearing that up around the info that the web gets it from. Did have some scepticism about whether it might have been based on the same case, but the conformation really helps. I'm going to go and have a look at the Dinoflagellate now. There's so much to know

Do fish have a resistance to this by any chance, or are they at just as much risk?

In the wild, it is usually not the fish that get affected by the dinos, but farther up the food chain. ie; seals and dolphins, that eat the fish that eat other animals the eat the algae during blooms. In the aquarium we tend not to have things that eat other things we keep.
You can look up Red Tides or Algae Blooms to see how this affects our oceans.

What about the palytoxin itself? Does that harm the fish by any chance of it came from the coral?
