Yellow fiji toadstool dying?

So i got myself a yellow fiji toadstool a few months ago. It hasnt really been super happy anytime but the last month i think i had it in a very low flow area without knowing. It was not looking Very good during that time. I saw it started to shed something at the edges. Like fuzzy stuff which revealed yellow underneath.

I moved it and gave it much more flow and it has been happier, but today its been grumpy again staying closed and shedding more at the edges. Im worried that its dying. If so what should i do? Should i cut the edges?

Kind of hard to see very well with the lighting. Can you do another video with white lights only?

Looks like it’s shedding. If it feels firm to the touch it’s fine just likely shedding. What are your parameters like?

My leathers shed every few weeks.

Higher light and flow for the Fiji. There appears to be algae growth around the Sacrophyton. You might have address nutrient issues promoting the algae growth.

Toadstools are funny. I recently had one totally closed up for 2 months. Re-opened like nothing ever happened.

Turning white or melting is what it will look like if its dying, your coral looks perfectly fine. Give it good flow and good light and it will do well.

Thanks for the replies. Always wanted one of these and it wasnt exactly cheap so would really suck if i manage to kill it. :p

I do have had hair algea issues in the tank for quite some time, but its finally looking way better. Almost none at the rock atm.

Salinity: 1.025

I have it in high light (200ish PAR) and high flow imo. But its hard to tell whats enough flow, as it was in the video. Did that seem enough? Here is a clearer picture of it.

It looks like it's going to open again soon. You can try taking a turkey baster to those spots. It looks like areas where algae tried to grow or detritus settled. Certainly doesn't look like it's dying. I put mine in high flow areas.

How do you define super happy? Has it ever open with full extension? I my experience ALK can play a big role with yellow fiji toadstool. Your number looks good, I would recommend having LFS test as well. Also remove hair algae at base of toadstool. Lastly what type of lighting and how old?

Yes it has been fully open but not often and it was closed all the time when it was in that low flow area, which was about 4-5 weeks. When moved it did open up which was about 2 weeks ago, you can see it in this video:



But then its been a bit cranky again. It has been opening up but not like in the video, it has been more of a "cup" shape. I find it really hard to know if the flow is right or not. My flow is quite turbulent so i dont want to push it too hard.

The lights are LED lights from Giesemann, about 1½ years old. I removed the algea from it now!

the flow in the video shows me low flow, not turbulent at all. You got room to crank it a lot more.

Either way, they are fairly easy to care for. I would just continue to keep an eye on it.

I have two toadstools, on any given day one or the other can be closed for no reason whatsoever.

Its 10 months old. I had big problems at about 6 months when i tanked my nutrients, which caused corals to die and dinos to bloom. I still have some and also some cyano but its going in the right direction.

Just a quick update, i moved the coral down to the sandbed and changed my flow from alternating stream to alternating short pulses, so flow is more gentle and i also gave it a dip treatment (Coral Protec) and its doing much better now. I now understand that it was being hit too hard, it makes sense that it had more of a cup shape to protect itself.

I read that these want sps-like flow, but they cant handle being hit as hard imo.

I've not read they like sps type flow, and I wouldn't think any softie type coral would... One of the reasons I do not have any SPS in my tank yet.... Though I am thinking about adding a couple easier to grow options, and putting them near the powerheads where the flow is highest.

Well, this is starting to get frustrating. I spoke too soon, it does not seem to be a flow issue. Just a few days later it was looking worse again. Its peeling off something brownish on the edges again and the yellow / dead areas are slowly getting larger. I say dead because the polyps in those areas i have not seen open but the others i have. If it is shedding its doing it incredibly slow.

I dipped again and will see what happens. In the dip i see lots of tiny bugs, i saw them last time as well but i thought it was just pods from the rock the coral is on. Can anyone help me ID in video below? I have added lots of tigs, thisbe and Apocyclops panamensis pods in the past.
