I rescued this fish when doing a reno at a house! Old owners left and new owners never moved in until construction was done leaving him all alone for who knows how long…. When I got him he looked a lot worse and certain people told me to just feed him and he should come back but it’s been 3 months now and is any of the damage reversabel

this unfortunately will be how the tang will look. Not sure what is meant with coming back. In part looks like aggression damage with fins and body. Same applies with HLLE. There will be restoratiion in part, but rarely full healing.
Best you can do is provide Good water quality with reliable test kits and diet as listed below (some items suggested- not every one):
LRS herbivore diet
Formula 2 flake and frozen
TDO Pellets
small plankton
Hikari Marine cuisine
Ocean nutrition veggie diet
spirulina brine shrimp
mysis shrimp
Prime reef
Nori seaweed basted with garlic extract

Add selcon vitamins to foods occasionally

Thank you for rescuing this guy! Sometimes their fins grow back but he may never look fully “healthy.” The key is that you’re taking care of him now and the info that @vetteguy53081 gave you is good. He deserves a good life & it sounds like you’re giving him one. :)

Yep, that’s pretty classically how HLLE looks on yellow tangs. Sorry, I’ve had zero success getting to grow their fins back from this part - but you may be able to halt the progression and the fish will live many years…feed it well, good water quality and no carbon.

Poor guy. I'm happy he's pulled through so far after 3 months. Another thing you can do is keep him alone as long as possible. Other fish can cause stress. A stressed fish is a slower recovering fish.

This stuff just angers me to no end. Sure its just a fish but someone brought it into their home so they are responsible for its care since it is a living creature. Give it away, trade it in , even euthanasia is better than just being abandoned and left to starve IMO. Kudos to you for stepping up and rescuing it.

They had one in similar condition at my lfs for over a year. The dorsal fin never did grow back but the fish colored up and was healthy except for that. They eventually listed it for sale and someone bought it.

Jay, Why no carbon?
Carbon can contribute to HLLE and if too much flush pigment. I use undersized portion of Chemipure Blue and coloration of mine are bright yellow:

Good water quality and diet are contributors to color. This fish has been through a lot and is thriving which is best news

Jay, Why no carbon?
Often is the original cause of HLLE in tangs and many other fish. Here is an article about it:
