Yuma Care and discussion

Mine yuma started at the bottom and now they are right under my 150w hqi MH. I didn't want to put him up there but I have to much on the sand. The yuma is under pretty good amount of flow. I noticed a few months ago he started to move around the rock and leaving babies all over. I started dosing kawk about the same time this started, not saying it caused it but it happened about the same time. Here are a few pics. Try to ignore the freaks if you can :)

I'm getting 3 wild (I know, I know) yumas tomorrow. It's my first time with these guys and I was wondering what if any kind of dip do you use? I'm an old hand at dipping zoas, but didn't know if these guys would be okay if I used FW, Lugols and FWE.

I have serveral florida rics and only one yuma. it has neon green tip over a burgandy-like color. I got one polyp and split it into 4 pieces within a week of getting it. I have kept it in hi light, low light, hi-flow, low-flow, t5s with 150 MH, and even 132 watt PCs. They seem to be happy in every condition. I have had it for about 1.5 years so far. I gave 1 of the 4 polyps to a friend and i still have 3 currently. Maybe the morph i have is much less demanding and hardy compared to the other morphs (ie pinks)?

I don't dip my yumas, if your going to dip them then it should be a disinfectant like Kents or Seachems in some tank water. Any thing other then tank water will end up making them mush instead of mush-rooms.....LOL..Just made that up! BUt if they are from a good source and are healthy you shouldn't have any issues, although sometimes they do and have melted on many people.....I have just started to being able to keep them again.....Alot of it has to do I think with healthy yumas from the start and proper water parameters.

I practically stole them from an ebay seller, but they looked pretty good with a nice tight mouth and great extension so I'm hoping that they will do well and thanks for this thread. Its been very informative!

No problem, one of the most popular mushrooms I think needs a descusion as there are so many people that have problems with them......

Do you guys feed your yumas? I do about 1 time every week sometimes less.

I have 2 that will actively eat and 2 that won't....I don't feed anything larger then small hikari mysis.....As the smaller the food is the more realistic the situation that the yuma would see on the reef....I do about twice a week, but I lost all my food after the 4 day power outage.....Need to resupply...

I wouldnt dip, they are stressed enough as it is. I think it could do more harm than good.

I have one right now that looks like it wants to move.....Kinda looks like a baby who is trying to fill it's diaper. It inflates up but looks a bit tense, still has tight mouth and is healthy though. Part of it's foot is inflated looking like an anemones foot when they want to move.....Maybe it will leave one behind that would be sweet....

Sounds like what mine is doing now and once mine started he hasn't stopped I noticed last night that he leaving another yuma behind. The only thing I am worried about it the last time I had a shroom move all around he stopped and popped off the rock. I hope this doesn't happen.

I noticed a flourscent green pea-sized "ball" about 1/2'' away from where my pink yuma is mounted. How do they reproduce? Is it a baby yuma I'm looking at even though its a different color?

Vince they usually reproduce by paetal laceration......Could very well be a baby, they tend to be differant color as the foot doesn't usually get a light of light.....

Yeap, the mother yuma moved up about half an inch. That's exciting news! It's still a neon green ball but hopefully it will develop into a small yuma soon.

OK, I have had some issues with 2 wild Yumas as of last week......

The large pink one I shown pics of has now began to succumb to some kinda stress. Details and observations ......

The last month my tank has gone under some tough times, power outage for 4 days then 3 days later my VHO ballast catches fire. So I was out of supplemental lighting for 11 days I think. So in the the time between my VHOs going out and the new T-5 setup replacing what I had for supplementation my pink yuma and blue and pink yuma have succumb to some stresses. I had just my 14k 250 Hamilton lighting the tank for those 11 days or so and within this time the Yumas began to deflate and not quite gap but their mouths became slightly loose. I also noticed that in the pink yuma there was some ministerial filaments that were showing from underneath the foot.

The yuma began to let go of the rock that it is on and I could lift half of it up and see that the filaments were coming out from the bottom. This whole time they have not melted but are slimming up pretty bad at night.

So with the thought of the slime being an infection which there has been no brown jelly type substance which is usually the first sign, I'm not honestly sure if the slime isn't a defense of some sort. So I figured that when I put the new lights up things might change for them possibly.....

Well they haven't, so I have dipped both of them 2 times now in a tank water furan bath. This seems to have slowed what ever process they are in and seem to not slime as bad the night of the dip but again return to slimming at night the night after. The blue and pink on seems to have bleached for some reason, it is not in direct lighting as well and is in-fact in quite shaded and in some indirect lighting. So this situation seems to be not a bacterial infection but a stress caused by the fact the lighting drastically changed overnight and they could not take the change......

The only thing thing that has changed is I added a Filstar xP2 canister filter to help with the receding sponge colony that has taken up root under about 25% of the rock-work. The only thing I can think of as a possibility is photo-shock and not from to much light but a drastic change of lighting..

Is there a possibility that the sponge is sending out a chemical that is effecting them? Not sure really but both of them are located in an area the the sponge is out in the open and the rocks that the Yumas are on is resting against the rock work that the sponge has taken over any ideas on that? I might move them to a new location and see if the recoup or not....

I am still going to do dips just to control and keep at bay hopefully a bacterial infection.....I am going to add today a few drops of Tobramycin antibacterial the Dr. gave me a prescription for my eye infection I had. I kinda want to see if that will help as well.....
