Hey all, Finally got into a 200+ gallon tank after buying 3 and never setting them up. Previously just had biocubes and a solana. 10 years ago was the last time I had a tank. And Petco tanks were bad then, and I'm still seeing posts on other platforms with filthy tanks fish breathing hard at the bottom, upside down. How is this still be able to go on for so long? I know they're just fish but it just seems so wrong. What can be done in the community to break this?
Welcome to Reef2Reef!
It sucks people still do that to fish..

Welcome.
However, It is not true that Petco is killing fish. Petco Corpus Christi is a great fish store.
While it is no the best there is, The Corpus Christi Petco is a great reef store.
Of course these animal did not look like this when I first got them home. How you take care of them is of great important.
No copper in there system, the fish are healthy and at a reasonable price. That is how Petco survive.

My petco has an immaculate fish section. Almost all fish I’ve got in the last few years came from petco. I’ve also bought live rock right out of their display tanks, inverts. Never had an issue with stuff from my petco. They special order stuff for me also if needed, and i can pickup on arrival day so they don’t have to acclimate twice.

Welcome to reef2reef!

My PetCo is wonderful. It may even be better than my LFS TBH. I think it all depends on the store manager. You could have one that really cares for animals and loves them, or you can have one that is just there for the money, and could care less about the animals.

My local PetCo is one of the good ones. A majority of my fish come from there. Only 2 of mine come from somewhere else

Welcome,

Petco is the worst for saltwater!
You seem to have included the words saltwater and for. I once walked into a petco, when I was like 17 and saw a baby ferret... a couple days old. I bought it just because I was pretty sure no one else was going to bother trying to bottle feed it. All I know is that if you or I had kept animals the way they do and a neighbor called the cops there would be a non-zero chance of jail time.

Welcome to R2R I am shocked that there are some good petco stores because everyone that I have been in has been terrible for saltwater fish maybe I will check some out again to see if they have changed

The petco near me looked great I went there on lunch would check out the fish health then stop on my way home to grab the fish. I bought multiple fish and even took a chance on a small blue hippo that was getting bullied. A few months later now and all of the fish/inverts I got are doing great no loses between the 3 tanks they went in. But……. I went in last week and there were freshly dead fish in the tanks, labored breathers, fish bones blowing around, and just a complete nightmare of disgusting tanks with rotting anemones. The lady was feeding a tank with freshly dead fish sitting right in plain sight on the bottom. To say the least it was very disappointing and down right sad to see the decline and lack of care given to the fish there. If I knew it was going to be that bad I may have tried getting a few others out of there when I did.
