As several of you know, I'm new to the hobby and decided to finally stop lurking and buy the gear to start a nano. I thought did start small and go in the 12-15 range but many of you talked me out of it. So, I decided to go the Innovative Marine All-in-One 38g. I decided to start my own build thread.

All of the final parts arrived last week and I got the whole thing plumbed and the water making yesterday. To make a long story short, I bought a Spectrapure 90gpd RODI and make some tasty water all day yesterday. I mixed Salinity brand salt in and mixed it for several hours. I arranged about 32 pounds (I bought 50 and picked the best pieces) of Fiji live and about 28 pounds of Fiji pink sand.

The hardest part was plumbing in the bypass for the UV. I know I didn't have to do that. My family thought it would be easier to just plumb it in the return and turn off the UV light itself but I wanted to be able to bypass it for maintenance or disconnect entirely. It looks nice and hangs behind the tank neatly. The next hardest thing was getting the Ecoxotic 24" Panorama Fixture light to hang correctly. I scabbed some pieces together from the LFS with stand mounts and wire hanging kits. It looks decent and hangs about right. Sometimes it twists and it's a pita to get into the tank. I'll have to figure something out in that regard.

Over the next few weeks, while I watch the algae grow. I'll work on figuring out the reactor and the skimmer. They are on, but I'm sure I'm just wasting power at this point. I bought Phosban, but that's it. I need to learn this part. I also will be setting up the ATO in the next day or so. It doesn't look too hard and there's room in the central part of the return area in back.

Anyway, I tested the water for the first time and the results were as expected. Using a refractometer was easier than expected - stupid easy actually. It read 1.027. Water temp was 79.8F, Ph was 8.3, ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates were predictably 0. Nothing going on yet I guess.

After much ado, here are my pics.

Nice setup! As far as your lighting bracket goes ill show you a pic of one I made for cheap. Might give you some ideas. Also what kind of stand is your tank sitting on? I ask because the IM tanks have acrylic backs which in turn mean they can be drilled and plumbed. That is if you want to hide a few things and maybe add a sump. All in all really nice set up though. Wish I had put as much thought into it as you have when I first started.

I had an old night stand sitting in a spare room that seemed the perfect width and length. I bolted a wooden spacer to the back to support the vertical support. I drilled holes in the back to hide wiring and plan on putting power strips in the drawer. At least it sounds good at this point.

I wouldn't trust a night stand for very long. At Home Depot they sell stuff called superstrut. It goes together easily you just need to cut it to your lengths. Super strong stuff I used it before

You can jump start a cycle by throwing a piece of shrimp in and letting it sit for a while. If you just set it up and all your levels are normal you cycle hasn't started yet. Fritzyme is another nifty thing to use to help cycle your tank. After your initial cycle is over I would scrub the sides and do a water change. Then add the CUC. Reefs2go.com has pre made CUC that are good. That's where I get mine

Thanks. I may throw in something to get it going if I don't see some action in a week or so. I see about 20 spots of purple fuzzies on the rock. But I also see some hairy brown stuff and a few black spots. Not sure what all that is.

Looks like the diatoms are starting up. But I'm not sure what these black things are on the bottom right. The stringy long stuff is diatoms, right?

Diatoms still growing - purple stuff still growing. I thought I'd run the UV a bit and brush diatoms with a toothbrush. I thought better of it.

After good advice in another thread, I dropped in a jumbo raw table shrimp to decay and start the ammonia. This is because after day 5 of just live rock and live sand, I'm still sitting at 0ppm AN&N. Hopefully, I'll see the ammonia spike soon and get things rolling on the cycle.

Trying to be patient.

Ok. Well, after much ado. I think my tank has cycled. It grew some diatoms and I just used a toothbrush and rubbed some of it out. Not much there as far as diatoms now. Lots of coralline is growing in patches.

The skimmer is pulling off some real nastiness - the kid said it smells like feet and fart and dog snot all stuffed into a sheep intestine.

The ammonia spiked and it followed with nitrites and nitrites. It's all negligible now.

I started ghost feeding, as recommended today. Thinking about adding some Astrea turbos, Nassarius, some Cerith and Nerites. I'm thinking about a sand sifting star and maybe some emerald crabs. Not sure if there is enough food in there for these things yet but I'm thinking I'd like to stay ahead of the curve on the algae.

It should be ok to add those inverts. Just when you add fish do it slow. To much to quick can cause a mini cycle.

Yeah good point. I've read and I think my plan goes a bit like this. I'll add a few inverts like I mentioned above. After a few weeks, I'll add a shrimp or 2. I think by then, I should have a good grip on my stability. So then I'll start adding corals. Once I get a few corals going and they look good, I'll add fish after a few weeks.

Just thinking it out. Inverts, corals, then fish.

I would add fish before coral. Only because coral tends to be more expensive and much harder to care for then fish. I would wait till you have found your groove then add the coral. Just my 2 cents.

I have greenish algae with air bubbles attached to the tips. Any clue what it is and if I should worry about it?

It's just bubble algae. Nothing to worry about. Emerald crabs will take care of it.

Definitely not bubble algae. I looked after you said that. The pics and descriptions aren't close. What I have looks just like green regular algea that's attached to the rock. It just has little (like micro bubble size) clear oxygen bubbles attached to the algea.
